Johnny Manziel has something that Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco and Eli Manning don’t have. A win this season as a starter.
But I’m not about to say he’s going to join those dudes in the Super Bowl club any time soon. Or ever. Here’s where Manziel deserves some dap – The dude throws a nice deep ball. Three times in two games now, Football’s chucked a dime deep.
Manziel’s definitely found something with Travis Benjamin. He’s found the fastest dude on the field and thrown it as far as he can. I just don’t know if he’s found much else.
Running around and throwing a deep bomb is not running an offense. There’s making some plays, and then there’s playing quarterback. He can make that throw, but NFL starting quarterbacks need to make all the throws.
And, while I did take a pretty good run at him on the NFL On CBS yesterday, and I definitely give him credit for yesterday’s win, I still need to see more. A lot more.
Because every D the Browns face is going to see this on tape. Your bread-and-butter play can’t be just slinging it 50 yards down field.
When it’s 3rd and 9… The play can’t be… “Everybody go long.”
The Browns won the game. He deserves credit. But remember, he was only out there because Josh McCown didn’t clear concussion protocol. And there’s no telling if Manziel will be there or not this week. He was decent yesterday. Not great. Decent.
And that doesn’t wipe away the fact that he was terrible in Week 1.
And yesterday, while he was exciting: he’s always that. But – he only completed 8 passes. We don’t know when he’ll get his next start or if it will be Bad Johnny under center. I just know, – you can’t count on him to live off go-patterns every week. There are a lot more throws I need to see him make.
And I’d ask Browns fans to tap the breaks. He just took a nice step forward, but that’s usually right when this guy falls on his face.
